How we ranked the most Visited Countries?

You may notice that different websites sometimes show different tourism rankings. That’s because countries don’t always report visitor numbers in the same way or at the same time. Most global rankings are based on international tourist arrivals, which count people visiting another country for leisure, business, or other personal reasons.

Tourism organizations collect this information from border records, immigration data, and accommodation reports. A traveler visiting multiple countries during one trip may be counted once in each destination. Some figures are also updated after new data becomes available, so national totals may differ slightly from UN Tourism’s published statistics.

Are Transit Passengers Counted as Tourists?

In most cases, no. Passengers who stay inside an airport’s international transit area and do not officially enter the country are generally not counted as international tourist arrivals. However, reporting methods can vary between countries, so there may be small differences in how transit passengers are recorded.

Why Do Tourism Sources Show Different Numbers?

Tourism statistics can vary from one source to another for several reasons. Some reports use different reporting years, while others publish updated figures after revising earlier data. Countries may also count overnight visitors differently from same-day visitors. In some cases, returning citizens living abroad are included, while others exclude them. Some figures are based on border arrivals, while others use hotel guest records. Certain territories may also be listed separately from their parent country. Because of these differences and varying publication dates, tourism totals may not always match across sources.

Visitors: 102 million in 2025

France has been the world’s most visited country for many years, welcoming millions of international travelers every year. Its central location in Europe, excellent transport network, and wide variety of attractions make it a favorite destination for visitors from around the globe.

Paris is the country’s biggest tourism hub and is home to famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Just outside the capital, Disneyland Paris attracts millions of families each year and remains one of Europe’s most visited theme parks.

Beyond Paris, travelers head to the French Riviera for beautiful beaches and luxury resorts, while Provence is known for its lavender fields, charming villages, and local markets. During winter, the French Alps become a popular destination for skiing, snowboarding, and other outdoor activities.

France is also famous for its wine regions, including Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne, where visitors enjoy vineyard tours, wine tasting, and world-class cuisine. Easy road, rail, and air connections from neighboring European countries also make France one of the easiest destinations to visit.

Spain welcomed a record 96.8 million international tourists in 2025, around 3.2% more than in 2024. These are provisional figures from Spain’s National Statistics Institute, so they may be revised later.

What I like most about Spain is the variety it offers. You can explore art and architecture in Barcelona, visit royal landmarks and museums in Madrid, or enjoy traditional streets, flamenco culture, and historic buildings in Seville. Spain’s food, local festivals, and relaxed outdoor lifestyle also make each region feel different.

For a beach holiday, travelers can visit the Mediterranean coast or escape to the Balearic Islands, including Mallorca and Ibiza. The Canary Islands are another popular choice, especially during winter, because of their mild weather, volcanic scenery, and sandy beaches. Spain’s warm climate and wide range of direct flights make it appealing throughout the year.

However, rapid tourism growth has also created problems. In Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, and other busy destinations, residents have raised concerns about crowded streets, rising rents, and homes being converted into short-term tourist accommodation. Spain is now promoting more responsible travel, sustainable transport, and lesser-known destinations to reduce pressure on popular areas.

Travel Tip: Visit Barcelona or the islands outside July and August. Spring and early autumn usually offer warm weather, better prices, and fewer crowds.

3. United States 

Visitors: 68.3 million in 2025

The United States welcomed around 68.3 million international visitors in 2025, compared with 72.4 million in 2024. Although it remains the most visited country in the Americas, arrivals were still below the 79.4 million visitors recorded in 2019, before the pandemic. When you visit the US. What stands out to me about the United States is its incredible variety. New York City attracts visitors with Times Square, Broadway, museums, and famous landmarks. Los Angeles is known for Hollywood and its beaches, while Las Vegas offers resorts, shows, and nightlife. Orlando remains a major family destination because of Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and other theme parks.

The country also offers much more than big cities and entertainment. Travelers visit the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and other national parks for hiking, wildlife, and unforgettable scenery. Because the country is so large, road trips are one of the best ways to explore its different regions, from the beaches of Florida and California to the mountains, deserts, and small towns of the interior.

Canada and Mexico remain two of the United States’ most important visitor markets because they share land borders with the country. In 2024, international arrivals reached 91% of their 2019 level, but recovery differed by market. Visitors from Canada were close to their previous level, while arrivals from several Asian countries remained much lower.

The United States does not always receive the highest number of tourists, but it earns more tourism revenue than many countries with larger arrival totals. 4. Türkiye 

Visitors: 63.9 million in 2025
Change from Previous Year: Up 2.7%

Türkiye welcomed 63.9 million visitors in 2025, an increase of 2.7% from the previous year. This official total includes about 52.7 million foreign visitors and 11.2 million Turkish citizens who live abroad. Tourism income also increased by 6.8% to more than $65.2 billion.

The country’s official English name is Türkiye, although many English-speaking travelers still search online using the older name, “Turkey.” What stands out to me about Türkiye is how easily it combines city life, beaches, natural scenery, and ancient history within one trip.

Istanbul is the country’s main tourism center. Visitors come to see the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Grand Bazaar, and the busy waterfront along the Bosporus. A ferry ride between the European and Asian sides is also one of the simplest ways to experience the city’s unique location.

For beach and resort tourism, Antalya and the Turkish Riviera are major attractions. The region offers long Mediterranean beaches, family resorts, ancient ruins, and warm summer weather. Antalya alone received more than 16.3 million foreign visitors during the first ten months of 2025, showing how important the coast is to Türkiye’s tourism industry.

In central Türkiye, Cappadocia attracts travelers with its unusual rock formations, cave hotels, underground cities, and sunrise balloon views. History lovers can also explore Ephesus, Troy, Hierapolis, and many other Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman sites.

Strong airline connections are another reason for Türkiye’s growth. Istanbul works as a major flight hub between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Competitive hotel, food, and transport costs also make the country attractive to travelers who want a rich experience without the prices found in some Western European destinations.

You may see different visitor totals for Türkiye in global rankings. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism often reports border entries by foreigners and Turkish citizens living abroad. UN Tourism may use a more standardized measure of international tourist arrivals and publish its figures at a different time. Because the categories and publication dates are not always the same, the totals can differ even when both sources are correct. Türkiye’s border statistics are based mainly on passport and official entry records.

Travel Tip: Combine Istanbul with only one additional region, such as Cappadocia, Antalya, or Ephesus. Türkiye is much larger than it looks on a map, and trying to cover every major destination in one short trip can feel rushed.

5. Italy 

Visitors: About 185 million in 2025
Change from Previous Year: Up 7.1%

Italy recorded about 173 million foreign tourist arrivals in registered accommodation in 2024, based on official tourism data. International arrivals increased by7.1% compared with 2023. Early results for 2025 also show continued growth, with foreign arrivals rising by another 1.4%.

What stands out to me about Italy is that every major city offers a different experience. Rome is filled with ancient landmarks, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Pantheon. Florence attracts art lovers with Renaissance buildings and museums, while Venice is famous for its canals, bridges, and historic palaces.

Milan adds a more modern side to Italian tourism. It is known for fashion, shopping, design events, and the impressive Milan Cathedral. Religious travel is also important, especially in Rome because of nearby Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and major Catholic celebrations.

Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage locations than any other country. These include historic city centers, archaeological areas, churches, villages, and natural regions. Its cultural appeal is also clear in visitor numbers: Italian state museums, monuments, and archaeological sites received a record 60.8 million visits in 2024.

Outside the cities, the Amalfi Coast attracts visitors with colorful cliffside towns and Mediterranean views. Tuscany offers vineyards, rolling hills, medieval towns, and peaceful countryside stays. Italian food is another major reason people visit. Travelers come to enjoy regional pasta, pizza, seafood, cheese, gelato, olive oil, and local wines. Food-and-wine travel has grown strongly, with around 1.1 million foreign visitors choosing trips focused on Italian cuisine and wine.

However, popular destinations often struggle with overcrowding. Venice has introduced an access fee for many day visitors on selected busy dates. In 2026, the fee is €5 when booked early and €10 for late bookings, applying between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on 60 selected days from April to July. Overnight guests and several other groups may qualify for exemptions.

Other measures include controlling short-term rentals, managing cruise traffic, limiting vehicles on crowded coastal roads, and encouraging tourists to visit smaller towns. These steps aim to protect historic places while reducing pressure on residents.

Travel Tip: Do not plan only Rome, Florence, and Venice. Adding a smaller town or countryside stay can provide better food, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed view of Italian life.

6. Mexico 

Visitors: 98.2 million in 2025
Change from Previous Year: Up 13.6%

Mexico welcomed 86.4 million international tourists in 2024, making it the most visited country in Latin America. Visitor numbers continued to grow thanks to its beautiful beaches, rich history, vibrant culture, and convenient access from North America. Tourism also remains one of the country’s most important industries.

What I like most about Mexico is that it offers two completely different travel experiences. You can relax at world-famous beach resorts or explore centuries of history in colorful cities and ancient archaeological sites.

The country’s most popular beach destination is Cancún and the nearby Riviera Maya, where visitors enjoy white-sand beaches, turquoise Caribbean waters, luxury resorts, snorkeling, diving, and family-friendly attractions. These coastal areas also provide easy access to cenotes, nature parks, and nearby islands.

Away from the coast, Mexico City attracts travelers with its museums, colonial buildings, lively plazas, and excellent food scene. It combines modern city life with centuries of history, making it one of the most interesting capitals in the Americas.

History lovers often visit Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and one of the most important cities of the ancient Maya civilization. Other archaeological sites, including Tulum, Teotihuacán, and Palenque, help visitors learn more about Mexico’s rich cultural heritage.

Food is another reason why millions of people visit Mexico every year. Authentic tacos, tamales, mole, fresh seafood, and regional dishes attract food lovers from around the world. Local festivals, music, colorful markets, and traditional celebrations also give travelers a chance to experience Mexican culture beyond the beaches.

The United States remains Mexico’s largest international tourism market because of the shared border, short flight times, and strong business and family connections. Competitive hotel prices, affordable dining, and reasonably priced transportation also make Mexico an excellent choice for travelers looking for good value.

Mexico also benefits from strong regional air connections. Direct flights link major destinations such as Cancún, Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Los Cabos with cities across North America, Latin America, and Europe, making travel convenient throughout the year.

Travel Tip: If you plan to visit Cancún, spend a day exploring nearby attractions such as Chichén Itzá or a cenote. Combining beaches with history and local culture makes the trip much more memorable.

7. United Kingdom 

Visitors: 43.6 million in 2025
International Visitor Spending: £32.5 billion

The United Kingdom welcomed an estimated 42.6 million international visits in 2024. Overseas visitors spent about £32.5 billion and stayed for around 293 million nights. However, the figures remain under development and may receive future updates.

What stands out to me about the United Kingdom is how closely its history connects with modern city life. A traveler can visit an ancient castle in the morning, explore a famous museum in the afternoon, and watch a live theatre show in the evening.

London receives the largest share of international tourism. It recorded about 20.9 million overseas visits in 2024, which was close to half of the UK’s total. The capital offers famous attractions such as the British Museum, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. The British Museum received 6.5 million visits in 2024, while the Tower of London welcomed 2.9 million.

Royal history is another major attraction. Visitors often stop outside Buckingham Palace, watch the Changing of the Guard, and visit royal sites such as Windsor Castle and Kensington Palace. Important royal events can also attract large international audiences and increase interest in British heritage.

London’s West End adds entertainment to the trip. Its theatres present popular musicals, dramas, and family shows throughout the year. Edinburgh was the UK’s second most-visited town for international overnight trips in 2024.

In 2024, the UK welcomed a record 5.6 million visits from the US, making it the country’s largest individual visitor market. France and Germany were also among the leading sources of visitors.

Strong international airport connections support this tourism. London is served by five major airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, and London City. Airports in Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Glasgow also connect the country with destinations across Europe and other regions.

Travel Tip: Spend a few days in London, but add at least one smaller city. Edinburgh, Bath, Oxford, or York can provide a quieter and more traditional view of British history and culture.

8. Germany 

Visitors: About 499.5 million in 2025
Change from Previous Year: Strong growth supported by major events

Germany received about 37.5 million international tourist arrivals in 2024, placing it among the world’s most visited countries. Official German accommodation data also recorded strong growth in international overnight stays, helped partly by major events such as UEFA Euro 2024.

What stands out to me about Germany is the balance between modern cities and traditional scenery. Berlin attracts visitors with the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, the Berlin Wall memorials, and its creative neighbourhoods. It is also Germany’s most visited city.

Munich is known for Bavarian culture, museums, beer gardens, and easy access to the Alps. Frankfurt is an important financial and business centre with a major international airport. Cologne attracts visitors with Cologne Cathedral, Rhine River views, museums, and its famous carnival.

Germany also offers beautiful natural regions. The Rhine Valley is filled with vineyards, riverside villages, and hilltop castles. The Black Forest attracts visitors with wooded trails, traditional towns, lakes, and scenic drives.

Further south, the Bavarian Alps offer hiking, skiing, lakes, and mountain views. Nearby attractions include Neuschwanstein Castle, which looks like a fairytale palace, and historic towns such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Heidelberg, and Bamberg.

Seasonal events play a major role in German tourism. Munich’s Oktoberfest attracts visitors from many countries, while Christmas markets bring winter travelers to cities such as Nuremberg, Dresden, Cologne, and Munich. These events combine local food, crafts, music, and traditional decorations.

Germany is also a leading destination for business travel and trade fairs. Berlin hosts ITB, one of the travel industry’s largest events, while Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Munich, and Hanover hold major exhibitions for books, cars, technology, food, medicine, and manufacturing. This means many international arrivals come for meetings and exhibitions rather than holidays alone.

The country’s rail system makes multi-city travel easier. Germany has around 40,000 kilometres of railway lines, more than 5,700 stations, and over 800 daily connections. High-speed ICE trains connect major cities, while regional services reach smaller towns and countryside areas.

However, transit passengers should not always be counted as tourists. A traveler who changes planes at Frankfurt Airport without entering or staying in Germany is usually considered a transit passenger. Tourism-arrival figures normally count people who enter the country and visit for a travel purpose, while accommodation statistics count guests who stay in registered lodging. These methods can produce different totals.

Travel Tip: Use trains for travel between major cities, but book long-distance tickets early. Advance fares are often cheaper, especially during festivals, Christmas markets, and major trade fairs.

9. Japan 

Visitors: 42.7 million in 2025
Change from Previous Year: Up 15.8%

Japan welcomed a record 42.7 million international visitors in 2025. This was an increase of 15.8% from 36.9 million in 2024. It was also the first time the country received more than 42 million overseas visitors in one year.

What stands out to me about Japan is the variety packed into one country. Visitors can experience modern cities, ancient temples, mountain scenery, seasonal festivals, traditional food, and popular entertainment during the same trip.

Tokyo attracts travelers with its shopping districts, observation towers, technology, museums, anime culture, and busy neighbourhoods. Kyoto offers temples, shrines, traditional streets, gardens, and historic wooden buildings. Osaka is popular for its street food, nightlife, shopping, and major attractions.

Outside these cities, Mount Fuji remains one of Japan’s best-known natural sights. Travelers visit nearby lakes and viewpoints or climb the mountain during the official season. Hokkaido offers a different experience, with ski resorts, flower fields, national parks, seafood, and cooler summer weather.

Seasonal travel is one of Japan’s greatest strengths. The cherry-blossom season brings large crowds during March and April. Official figures show that 3.9 million visitors arrived in April 2025, setting a new monthly record at that time.

Autumn foliage creates another major travel season, especially in Kyoto, Nikko, Tokyo, and the Japanese Alps. International demand remained strong during the 2025 autumn months, with record visitor numbers reported across many source markets.

Japanese food is also a major attraction. Visitors come for sushi, ramen, tempura, wagyu beef, seafood, matcha desserts, and regional dishes. Anime, manga, video games, fashion, theme parks, films, and traditional arts further increase global interest in the country.

A favourable exchange rate has made hotels, meals, transport, and shopping feel more affordable for many international travelers. Expanded air services and returning regional routes have also improved access from East Asia, Southeast Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia.

However, tourism growth has created overcrowding in parts of Kyoto, Mount Fuji, and other popular areas. Japan is supporting crowd control, better visitor facilities, regional tourism, and measures that protect residents’ daily lives. Its latest national tourism plan also gives greater attention to preventing overtourism and encouraging visitors to explore destinations outside the busiest cities.

Arrivals: 40.7 million in 2024

Greece welcomed a record 40.7 million international tourist arrivals in 2024, an increase of 12.8% compared with 2023. Tourism continued to grow across both mainland Greece and its famous islands, making the country one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations.

What stands out to me about Greece is how easily visitors can combine history, beaches, and island life in a single trip. One day you can explore ancient ruins, and the next you can relax beside the Aegean Sea.

Athens is the country’s cultural heart. The city’s most famous attraction is the Acropolis, home to the Parthenon and several other ancient monuments. Visitors also enjoy the Acropolis Museum, Plaka’s historic streets, lively squares, and traditional Greek restaurants.

The islands are Greece’s biggest tourism draw. Santorini is famous for its whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches, dramatic cliffs, and unforgettable sunsets. Mykonos attracts visitors with beautiful beaches, nightlife, luxury hotels, and charming old streets lined with cafés and boutiques.
